Creative Critical Reflection- Question 2 Draft
Audience Engagement
In my audience engagement research I discovered that the best way to reach people who would like a music based film is through venues where music is performed. I saw examples like special appearances on music competition shows which was utilizes by the marketing team for the film Rocket Man. My favorite example comes from the team for A Star Is Born who did a partnership with Live Nation, who hosts a lot of major concerts. Both of these actions help the film reach large audiences who like music.
My marketing plan includes three main parts. The first part is to create a social media account because no matter what genre the film is social media is a good place to reach viewers. The next part involves having the star of the film appear on American Idol for a guest performance. The next part involves a partnership with Live Nation wherein they advertise for us with banners and screen ads at their events. This plan is effective because it is aimed at the right crowd, people who like music. Additionally the plan reaches large crowds of music fans. American Idol has many shows with audiences of thousands of people and Live Nation holds many more events with many containing many thousands of people.
Distribution
In my distribution research I learned that narrowing the theatrical window is beneficial and also that re-releasing the film in a new format or with bonus footage can be a good way to pick up more revenue. Bohemian Rhapsody did a re-release of their film in a sing along format and they were able to pick up more profit. A similar thing was done with A Star Is Born, which re-released the film with bonus content. In terms of narrowing the theatrical window, Hearts Beat Loud is a good example because it had a limited release and then was made available for digital download.
My Distribution plan includes a limited release of my film for 3 weeks followed by a re-release with bonus content and a sing along format and then the film will be made available only on digital download. This is an effective distribution model for my film because most films make ninety percent of their profit in the first three weeks, this means with a shortened window we do not lose much revenue and we avoid the cost of keeping the film in theaters and running more ads. Another reason why this model is effective is that digital download is becoming more popular especially among music fans who already use services like Apple Music and Spotify for their music consumption. With this distribution model we have less overhead and we can possibly make the same amount of money or more.
