Film Project- Conventions

My film "The Real Deal" uses many conventions of the genre. A few physical examples of this are the close up camera shots of the actor playing the guitar. This is seen throughout the musical drama category to give the films a sense of authenticity showing that the instrument is being played. Another convention that my film uses is opening with a live performance. Other movies that do this include "A Star is Born", "Yesterday", and "School of Rock". This sets the tone right from the beginning that the film is centered around music.

My film represents two different social groups. The main social group my film represents is career musicians. This is represented by Andrew who is a musician trying to land a record deal. In the film I tried to show the struggles that new career musicians face like being told to fit a certain mold in their songwriting and style as opposed to being themselves. Another social group that is being represented is an ambitious young entrepreneur which is Max. He has the one and only goal of making sure his company is successful. Business owners, in the music business, tend to worry more about profitability whereas musicians tend to care about their art. These conflicting social groups are displayed in my film by Max and Andrew. In the film, Max is ambitious to acquire an artist that might bring him profit and Andrew wants to share music that he can be proud of, so the two have conflicting interests.

     The film "Bohemian Rhapsody" has a similar target audience because it is also a movie for music fans and follows he story of a musician rising to fame. This film is about Queen, a band that is well known today.      Since the band was well known, the film had many opportunities to reach their target audience with several resources such as a Queen tribute coming early in the process, creating hype for the film and restoring some memories of the band. Another marketing tactic used early on was interviews and TV show appearances with the lead actor Rami Malek talking about playing the character Freddie Mercury. Later on he made an appearance in character at Fox's CinemaCon. As things picked up other resources where used such as a deal with Wrangler creating a line of jeans inspired by the film. Film Genre Research- A Star is Born

"A Star is Born" opens by showing the Production company name with the sound of a crowd cheering in the background. Next the scene shows the main character backstage taking a handful of pills and walking on stage. The camera has a fish-eye effect to it to give the viewer the same intoxicated feeling that the main character is having. The band starts playing, he is playing the guitar. in the middle of the song the scene cuts to him entering the car with screaming fans behind him. The car rolls away and he starts drinking alcohol from the bottle as a ringing sound effect starts to build. This scene gives the feeling that the main character is exhausted from his life on the road. The film had a budget of 36 million dollars and a profit of 434.9 million dollars.
